ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Christine Barnes is an author, journalist and architectural historian. A former newspaper editor, her passion for historic mountain architecture began with a magazine article she penned on the reopening of Oregon's Crater Lake Lodge in 1996.

Since then, she has authored seven books on historic lodges, Great Lodges of the West, (1997), WWWest winner of the 1998 Benjamin Franklin Award for Best History Book from an Independent Publisher followed by Great Lodges of the Canadian Rockies, (1998), WWWest, runner-up for the 1999 Benjamin Franklin Award for Best History Book and Companion book to the 2004 PBS Series of the same name; El Tovar Celebrating 100 Years, Hopi House Celebrating 100 years, and Old Faithful Inn at Yellowstone National Park, (2001), WWWest, and Great Lodges of the National Parks, (2002), WWWest, the companion book to her first PBS television series, and Great Lodges of the National Parks, Volume Two, (2012 Second Edition) Farcountry Press, the companion book to a second PBS television series.

Soon after moving to Oregon from the San Francisco Bay Area, she wrote,Central Oregon: A View from the Middle, (1996), American & World Geographic. She and her husband, Jerry, then set out to continue their Oregon exploration. The result of Christine's research and writing and Jerry's photography is Only in Oregon, Natural and Manmade Landmarks and Oddities, Farcountry Press, (2004). When the centennial celebration for El Tovar hotel and Hopi House, both on the rim of the Grand Canyon, came up, Christine turned back to writing about historic architecture. She penned the exquisitely illustrated Hopi House, Celebrating 100 Years, (2005) WWWest, and her publisher repackaged El Tovar at Grand Canyon National Park to El Tovar, Celebrating 100 years, creating a two-book package for the April 13, 2005, reopening of El Tovar hotel after a $4.7 million restoration, and the centennial celebration of both historic structures.

Writing books is a change of pace from her 20-year career as a newspaper journalist during which time she worked as features writer and then editor for the San Francisco Examiner, Oakland Tribune and Contra Costa Times.

In addition to writing books, Christine writes articles on historic lodges, the national parks and a variety of travel adventures. She is often called upon as a source and subject for various radio, television, newspaper and magazine stories.

She is a member of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians and American Society of Journalists and Authors. Christine and her husband live in Bend, Oregon, where she served on the Historical Landmarks Commission for Deschutes County and is involved in conservation and growth issues of the state. They have two married children and four grandchildren. A Colorado native, she is a graduate of Northwestern University.
